Years of fire testing and the production of codes and standards have influenced building design and construction. Are we safer as a result? The answer is “yes,” but we all know that fires and explosions still occur, sometimes catastrophic, sometimes tragic. History keeps handing out new lessons.

Knowledge of codes and standards provides a means for assessing the cause of a fire or explosion and the effectiveness of fire protection measures that did or did not exist at the time of the incident.
