From a historical perspective, the value of the worker may have found its beginning with the Industrial Revolution. However, along with the concentration of energy and the complexity of machinery came increased exposure to injury. Workplace safety continues to be a work in progress.

In addition to the introduction of the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the ethic of caring for the well-being of workers and the economic impact of lost skills and time due to injury continues to stimulate changes in the workplace. When a machine-related injury occurs, specific questions arise. What knowledge did the manufacturer of the machine and the employer have concerning how the machine was to be used? What safety devices were installed? How was the machine being used when the injury took place? To what extent was this use anticipated by the manufacturer and by the employer?
