Power Plant Boiler Explosion

A 1950’s vintage 80 MW power plant, powered by two boilers, was damaged by furnace and steam explosions while being lit-off. A furnace explosion in one of the two boilers caused tubes to rupture at header connections. The ensuing steam explosion destroyed the boiler and turbo generator enclosure and damaged the adjacent boiler and other equipment. Information as to the cause was collected during the damage assessment of the plant. Further damage was identified while the repair work was monitored using periodic visits and remote communication with the owner’s onsite staff. The resulting claim was analyzed using the data collected and/or generated over the course of the assessment and repair work.
